The Art of Camouflage: Turning Ugly Electric Meters into Street Masterpieces

By Rob & Anne  •  January 30, 2026
There is a specific kind of joy we get from wandering the side streets of a new town, moving past the main tourist traps and really looking at the infrastructure of a place. Usually, the "infrastructure"—the wires, the pipes, the utility boxes—is something your eyes are trained to ignore. It’s the visual white noise of modern living.

But recently, we noticed a delightful trend that stopped us in our tracks. Instead of letting electric meters remain as industrial eyesores scarred into the front of beautiful buildings, local artists have turned them into canvases. We were fascinated by the way facades often camouflage these unsightly metal boxes and glass bulbs, integrating them into the visual story of the street.

Take this first example we stumbled upon. At first glance, it looks like a vibrant, welcoming mural of a writing desk, complete with a bright teal chair and the "Alma Libre Bookstore" resting on the surface. But look closer.

The artist didn't just paint around the utility; they embraced it. The electric meters are perfectly positioned to become the body of a flower vase and elements of the window frame. The glass bulbs of the meters catch the sunlight, adding a real-world texture to the painted sun and flowers. It transforms a wall of voltage measurement into a scene of literary comfort.

Further down the road, we found a more elegant approach. Against a stark, matte black background, this facade used traditional floral motifs to hide the modern technology.

Here, the meters serve almost as the "eyes" of the piece, surrounded by lush red hibiscus flowers and golden flourishes. It’s a wonderful reminder that you don't always have to hide the necessary parts of life; sometimes, you just need to dress them up a little bit. It shows a level of care and pride in the property that really resonated with us.

And then... well, then there is this masterpiece.

We couldn't help but laugh when we turned the corner and found this chaotic "installation." If the previous walls were about hiding the ugly, this one was about celebrating the confusion. It is a tangled web of conduits, mismatched boxes, and exposed PVC that looks like a puzzle no electrician ever wants to solve.

But the cherry on top? The two Corona Light cans perched delicately on the bottom ledge. We like to think of it as a different kind of environmental integration—perhaps a tribute to the thirsty worker who finished the job (or, judging by the wires, gave up halfway through). It’s a hilarious, honest reminder that for every piece of polished street art, there’s always a bit of real, unfiltered life right around the corner.
